The Threshing Floor
“My daughter,” Naomi begins, “should I not seek a resting place for you, that it may be well with you?” The gleaning season is closing; the door of survival-by-scraps is about to shut. So Naomi lays out a plan that would have made any mother nervous: wash, put on perfume, dress, go down to the threshing floor at night — and don’t let him see you until he has finished eating and drinking.
The threshing floor was where the harvest was winnowed by the evening wind, and the men slept beside the grain to guard it. A woman arriving alone, at night, was risking her reputation and possibly her safety. Naomi’s instruction — uncover his feet and lie down, “and he will explain to you what you should do” — was a culturally loaded act of petition: not seduction, but a request, placed at the feet of a man with the power to grant it.
Ruth does it all. At midnight Boaz startles awake to find a woman at his feet. “Who are you?”
Her answer is the bravest sentence in the book — and this time she does the explaining. “I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a kinsman-redeemer.” Cover me. Marry me. Redeem this family. She proposes — a foreign widow, to a Bethlehem landowner, on his own threshing floor.
Boaz’s response tells you everything about the man: he blesses her. He calls her kindness to Naomi’s family greater now than at the beginning — she has not run after younger men. “Do not be afraid. I will do for you whatever you request... all my fellow townspeople know that you are a woman of noble character.” The same Hebrew phrase Proverbs 31 uses — eshet chayil.
Then, the complication. “There is a redeemer nearer than I.” Another man holds the prior legal claim. Boaz will not take a shortcut around the law, even for love: if the man will redeem, so be it; if not — “as surely as the LORD lives, I will.”
He sends her home before dawn with six measures of barley, so she does not return to her mother-in-law empty-handed. Naomi hears it all and gives the last word of the chapter: “Wait, my daughter... he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter today.”
