A Prayer for a Prodigal Child
For the mother praying in an empty kitchen about a person she cannot reach.
Luke 15:20 is the prayer’s picture — the father saw his son “while he was still a long way off,” which means he was watching the road. Praying for a child who has walked away is mostly the long faithfulness of keeping watch.
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the plunder of the tyrant will be retrieved; I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.
This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come, declares the LORD. Then your children will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children will return to their own land.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, comes home, and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep!’
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.
The prayer
Lord, You know where they are tonight and I do not.
Keep them. Not comfortable — kept. Let nothing happen to them that cannot be undone.
Send someone I will never meet to be kind to them at the right moment.
Where I have made this worse, forgive me, and do not let my mistakes be the last word over their life. Where I am angry, hold that too; I am too tired to sort it out tonight.
Keep the door open in me. Keep me watching the road without standing in it.
Bring them home. However long it takes, bring them home. Amen.
The father was looking
The detail everyone skips in Luke 15 is in verse 20: the father saw him “while he was still a long way off.” You do not see someone a long way off unless you have been watching.
That is what this season asks of you — not strategy, not the right argument. Watching the road. It is the least satisfying form of love and one of the strongest.
Holding on and letting go
Both at once, which is why this is so exhausting. You can pray fiercely and still not chase. You can keep the door open and still not fund the harm.
Boundaries are not the opposite of love here. Sometimes the door being open is only credible because there is a doorframe.
Be gentle with yourself
Every mother in this situation runs the tape back looking for the moment it turned. You were never the only influence in their life, and the story is not over. There is a fuller page at a prodigal child.
Where these words come from
Luke 15:20 for the road. Isaiah 49:25 — “I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.” Psalm 34:18 for you, tonight. Isaiah 55:11 for the promise that His word does not return empty.
If your child is in danger — from addiction, from someone else, or from themselves — please involve a professional and someone you trust. Prayer and practical help belong together here, and reaching for one is not a failure of the other.
Praying this for someone specific?
Light a candle for her — and come back to tend it tomorrow.
