Bible Verses for the Loss of a Friend
The world sometimes treats friendship grief as a lesser grief. It is not. She was your emergency contact, your witness, your person. God counts this loss too — He lost a friend Himself once, and He wept at the grave.
A friend’s death leaves a shaped hole no one else can fill. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,” and Proverbs 17:17 remembers what she was: “A friend loves at all times.”

Jesus wept.
I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother. You were delightful to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Jesus had a best friend too
When Lazarus died, Jesus did not hurry to the miracle first. He stopped and wept (John 11:35). David mourned Jonathan with a lament that has outlived kingdoms: “I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother” (2 Samuel 1:26). Friendship grief is biblical grief.
Grieving with others who loved her
Romans 12:15 gives friendship grief its assignment: “weep with those who weep.” Gather the circle. Tell the stories. The friends who loved her are the ones who can carry this with you.
A prayer for the loss of a friend
Lord, thank You for the gift of my friend — for the laughter, the loyalty, the years. I miss her in a hundred small moments a day. Comfort everyone who loved her. Help me carry forward the good she gave me. Hold her in Your keeping until we meet again. And let my memories of her stay sweet, not only sad. Amen.
