Bible Verses for the First Holiday After a Loss
Everyone else seems to be celebrating on schedule, and you are doing math they can’t see: one less plate, one less voice, one less gift to buy. The first holiday after a loss is not a test you have to pass. Let it be what it is.
The first holiday after a loss asks you to celebrate with an empty chair at the table. Matthew 5:4 says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted,” and Psalm 30:5 promises, “Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning.”
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
For His anger is fleeting, but His favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.”
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Let the holiday be what it is
You are allowed to cry at Christmas. You are allowed to skip the party, change the menu, or keep every tradition exactly the same. Matthew 5:4 does not say blessed are the composed. It says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Ways to remember at the table
Some families set a candle where she sat. Some tell one story before the meal. Some say her name out loud on purpose. However you do it, including her is healthier than pretending. Love does not end, and neither does hers in you.
A prayer for the first holiday
Lord, this holiday has an empty place, and I feel it everywhere. Give me grace to grieve and permission to smile. Be close to everyone missing someone at this table. Let the memories warm more than they wound. Hold us through this season, and quiet our hearts in Your goodness. You are near, and that is enough for today. Amen.
Carrying this for someone?
Light a candle for her — a small flame to return to each day, no account needed.
