At the edge of life, Scripture speaks its deepest certainties. Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me,” and Jesus promises in John 14:2, “In My Father’s house are many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you.”

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
Verses to read aloud at the bedside
Read slowly, and do not worry about finishing. Psalm 23 for the walk through the valley. John 14 for the rooms being prepared. Romans 14:8 for the truth underneath everything: “whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
For the ones keeping vigil
Watching someone you love die is its own grief, lived in advance. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” These hours feel like losing. Heaven calls them precious.
A prayer for the bedside
Lord, be near to the one I love as this road narrows. Let Your presence fill the room like light. Take the fear out of the unknown, and give peace that nothing can disturb. Hold us who keep watch, and when the time comes, carry her gently home. Until then, let no hour be wasted and no love left unsaid. Amen.
