Bible Verses for the Fear of Dying
It often arrives uninvited — in a doctor’s office, on a plane, at three in the morning. The fear of death is not a faith failure; it is a human certainty meeting a human limit. Scripture does not mock this fear. It tells you what Jesus did about it.

Fear of dying is one of humanity’s oldest fears, and Scripture answers it head-on. Psalm 23:4 says, “I will fear no evil, for You are with me,” and Hebrews 2:15 says Jesus came to “free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.
Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—whom shall I dread?
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
What Jesus did about death
Hebrews 2:14-15 says Jesus shared our humanity “so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death… and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” He went through death and came back, so that for His people it would become a doorway, not a drop.
Verses for when the fear visits at night
Start with Psalm 27:1 — “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” Then John 14, where Jesus describes preparing a place and promises to come back for His own. Read them out loud. Fear is loud; answer it out loud.
A prayer when I’m afraid of dying
Lord, You know the fear that comes over me when I think about dying. You conquered the very thing I fear. Walk with me through the shadows until they lose their power. Let Your promises be louder than my imagination. Give me peace about the end, and courage for all the life before it. Hold me fast in Your unchanging hands. Amen.
