Short Comforting Bible Verses for a Loved One's Death
Grief fogs concentration — long chapters can wait. What you need in these first days are verses short enough to hold in one breath, true enough to lean your whole weight on. Here they are, one stone at a time.
In the first days of loss, short verses carry best. Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted.” Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Hold one at a time, like stepping stones through the week.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Jesus wept.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
For His anger is fleeting, but His favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
Verses short enough to hold onto
Write them on cards. Tape one to the mirror, carry one in your pocket. “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). “Jesus wept” (John 11:35) — the shortest verse, and proof that God cries at gravesides too. “Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).
For grieving families
Grief shared is still grief, but it is not carried alone. Read these aloud together, or simply sit together in the same room with them. Romans 8:38-39 anchors the family in the one thing death could not touch: nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God.”
A prayer for the first days
Lord, we are heartbroken, and we are bringing it to You. Be near to this family in the empty chair, the quiet phone, the unfinished conversations. Comfort the children and the grown ones alike. Give us sleep tonight and grace for tomorrow. Hold our loved one in Your keeping, and hold us in Yours. Let love have the last word in us. Amen.
